office products are very slow when saving

When ever I go to save or save as a document from any of my office 2003
products it is very slow to find my hard drive or any network drive. I have
Norton Internete Security 2005 enabled. Most of the saves require minutes to
find a folder and perform the save. This does not happen on my other systems
running Office 2002 products using the same Norton Internet Security 2005 on
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

It also doesn't happen on any system I've seen Office 2003 running on,
including mine. An antivirus program will slow things down, because it wants
to check the file when you save it, but not by that much unless it is a huge
file.

One thing I've seen slow things down is that the home user edition of Norton
Antivirus will try to scan network drives when you access them. This can be
disabled in the corporate version (you let the other computer's antivirus
handle it) which can dramatically improve performance.

To see if it is the antivirus, just disable it for a few minutes and try a
save. Since you're running Internet Security, which has a firewall built in,
you may need to disable that also in case the firewall is interfering. If
the problem goes away, then it appears that something didn't install
properly. If you're running more than one antivirus program, that could
cause the problem also.

If disabling the antivirus doesn't get rid of the problem, I would suggest
one of the Windows XP newsgroups to see if they can help you find out why
your computer is responding so slowly.
