Office Outlook 97 only starts in safe mode

When Outlook loads, it hangs and then comes the three finger salute (ctl,
alt, del) when I end the hung state. Restarting only allows me to
successfully start in safe mode.

I've searched the internet. Plenty of people with the same problem, but no
solutions. I suppose I could continue to run Outlook in safe mode forever,
but I'm sure that's not what Microsoft has in mind . . . I'd appreciate
somebody coming forward with a solution.

Oh yea, one suggestion is to run 'scanpst.exe' on my outlook.pst. All that
does is start a new PST and I am still left running in safe mode.

Which addins do you have installed?
What is the size of your pst-file?
Locate outcmd.dat and rename it to .old

That's not what it does, it fixes repairable issues within the pst-file.

How do I determine? I look under 'options' and find nothing that would tell
me if I have any options. As far as I can determine during the installation
process, I let express install, install the normal stuff.

878,944KB

Locate outcmd.dat and rename it to .old

What does this file do? and What does this accomplish?

After running scanpst.exe on my outlook.pst, though the size of the file
remained the same, all my prior emails and files failed to show . . . and
most importantly, OFFICE OUTLOOK 2008 (not '07 as my original post mistakenly
said) still hung on the splash screen.

HELP!

Ok, first let's get this version thing straight; are you using Outlook 97
(as stated in subject) or 2007 (which you say you don't have)? There is no
such thing as Outlook 2008 (which you say you have).

As for resetting dat-files;
See http://www.msoutlook.info/question/19

Apparently you have a major corruption in your pst-file then. Create a new
one via the File-> New menu and move the objects from the old pst-file to
the new one and set the new pst-file as you default delivery location and
then disconnect the old.

The version I'm having problems with is Office Outlook (2007) - the most
recent release. Fingers are quicker than the brain.

Interesting . . . simply moving and re-naming the file will fix my problem?

I'll try that, hoping to realize success. BTW, how do I tell what add-ons I
have (if any?)

I didn't say anything about renaming. If you do that you'll very likely to
create a mail profile corruption. Simply set the newly created pst-file as
the default in your account settings.

Tools-> Trust Center-> Add-ins will tell you your active addins.
