Office Networking w/ DSL

L

Lanni R.

We have 2 computers networked. One has internet ability.
When networked together can't get online and when online can't network
between the two computers.
We have XP Pro on both machines.
One computer tech guy says to do this way and another says to do it
that way. Then the Internet Server Tech says to do this way. Neither
way last longer than a few days.
I have Zone Alarm Pro on main computer and had to take it off due to
problems getting on online per the Server Tech.
Need a fix so the machine #2 can read machine #1 and machine #1 can
still get online. Without nickel and dimeing us to death.
Any help is appreciated.

Buy yourself a little Linksys broadband/dsl router. It
comes with a 4 port 10/100 switch. Plug both machines
into the router and the router into your dsl modem.
configure the router to act as your hardware firewall to
the internet and enable dhcp addressing. Now BOTH
computers should be able to access the internet
independently of each other. Then go through the routine
setups to get the computers to see each other on your
small network.

Simplest method is a DSL/Cable Router with built-in switch. Such as
the Linksys line, like the BEFSR41:

I'd be tempted to get the wireless version for future addition of that
laptop you want... :)

Under $100 and fix all your issues.
