Office assistant question

Mel

I just downloaded Word 2003 on to my new Dell Laptop with XP Professional.
Occasionally when I open a Word document, new or otherwise, I get the
following window message: "There are no office assistant character files
present on the system. Pleas run Setup in maintenance mode and install at
least one character."

What is this about and how can I fix it? I did some exploration trying to
take care of the problem with no luck.

Thanks

In Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs, then click on Microsoft
Office 2003, and then click on the Change button.

Click on Add or Remove Features, Next.

Click on Choose Advanced Customization of applications, Next.

Click on the + next to Office Shared Features to expand it.

Click on Office Assistant to expand it.

To install all of the characters, click the arrow next to Office Assistant
and choose Run All from My Computer. Otherwise, you can pick and choose.
When you've finished making your selection, click on Update and follow the
prompts.

This assumes you actually want an Office Assistant. I have been using Office
2003 for years and have never had one installed. There's a Help setting
somewhere to disable it (a toggle on the Help menu, for one).

Indeed. I find Help very unhelpful on this score, by the way. The fact that
there is a Help item to Show the Office Assistant makes me wonder if I
actually do have it installed and have just never allowed it to show itself.

I've noticed in my 2007 Word there is no office assistant, either it
didn't get installed or it doesn't have it.
Previously, in oder versions, the office assistant would pop up, like a
little paper clip, asking me.."I see you are writing a letter, would you
like help with that?"

NO!!!! Go away you stupid talking paper clip!

I know you could disable it and I would now and then, but seems like
it would always come back. I finally changed it to a red smiley face which
wasn't quite so bad and I could throw it across the screen when it got in my
way.

2007 doesn't have it. (Thank heavens!)
