Office 2003/OS XP

I use my Laptop whenever I am out of town. I have not used my Laptop for my
e-mails for about a year. Recently, I was on the rad and opened my e-mail and
a torrential of old e-mails downloaded and the system crashed.
My guess is that the the memory overloaded.
What are my options to make the system work? Where should I go to remove the
old files? Do I have to re-install the Office again? I hate to loose all
contacts in my outlook file.

Not knowing (or you specifying) the type of crash, this is just about
impossible to answer if you need to reinstall office. Other than that, your
e-mail, contacts, tasks, .etc are stored in a file with a .PST file
extension. This file is not touch during an uninstall/reinstall office and
neither is the registry settings that cover your Outlook configuration.

Out of curiosity, does Outlook start in safe mode?

How to:
Select Start > Run > type: outlook.exe /safe > OK button

If you are using a pop account presumably you will have set your primary PC
to leave a copy on the server, if however its an imap account then this
would be expected
The amount of mail downloaded has nothing to do with any sys crash, removing
old files wont do anything, niether will uninstalling Office & reinstalling.
Are you now saying the laptop wont boot up or something else?

My system is not crashing. When I try to open Outlook - I am getting the
following error message.

"Cannot open Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open Outlook window. The
set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your
Administrator if this condition persists."

I can do my work with my Laptop except Outlook. Earthlink is my internet
server. I can go to earthlink page to access my mail. I leave a copy in the
server.

One time a paid Tech support told me that there is a space limit. I had lots
of e-mail and large number of Project Directory. He suggested me to remove
some of them. I did and the system worked. That happened with my Desktop
machine. Isn't .PST files have all the mails, personal Folders, Delete
folders, etc. Even I reinstall the Outlook - will I not be in the same
situation with the storage issue?

I have not tried to open in Safe Mode. I will try that. May be I will be
able to delete the files at Safe Mode.

Thanks for the help.

I tried to run outlook.exe/safe. The system came back file not found. The
search found the outlook.exe file.
Eventually, I went thru repair/install mode. I still got the same error
message. I then uninstall the program using the Program CD and re-installed
the Office 2003 without luck.
Since Laptop is my back-up - I decided to remove everything related to
Office through Control Panel Software removal process. I then deleted all PST
files from Laptop. Checked Registry for any trace related Office 2003. I then
re-booted the computer and installed Office 2003. Now Outlook is working. I
have to import my contacts from my Desktop.
It seems some how PST file got corrupted or got virus. It is possible of a
visrus attack because Anti-Virus might not be current due to non-use.
I thank all of you for your helping advice.
