The document doesn't change to anything. It is still a Word document and
Word will open it as such. What is wrong is the file association in the
registry as reflected in Windows Explorer. You should be able to correct
this by re-registering Word, which should reassociate its files. From
Windows > Start > Run type Winword /r and press enter.
