OE6 not receiving attachment from 1 Outlook sender

I posted this in the OE forum but wanted to cross post here as well. I know
different people visit different places and I need all the help I can get:

I have 3 OE identities on 2 computers that do not recieve attachments from 1
sender who is using Outlook. Attachments from any other sender are recieved
fine. This does not occur with all OE accounts. I use OE and recieve the
attachments fine.

I've looked at one of the computers (the other is a vendor's) and the "Do
not allow attachments...." is NOT checked in the security tab. This
"stripping" occurs with any file the sender emails. I have checked the
senders computer and she composes in HTML, not rich text. We use Symantec
Corportate AV v.10. I turned off email scanning and still could not get the
attachment. If I forward the email with the attachement using my webmail or
send the file with another outlook account, the attachment is recieved.

The system using OE that I have access to is XP Pro SP2, OE6, IE6, fully
updated.
The system using Outlook is XP Pro SP2, Outlook 2003, IE6, fully updated and
3 weeks old. I am trying to narrow down when this problem started to occur
and if it has anything to do with the new computer.

Is the message size large enough to have the attachment? Did you look at the
message source to see if it's there as a winmail.dat? If so, the outlook
sender needs to use plain text or html, not RTF formatting.

Hi Diane,

The outlook sender is composing in HTML. I assume the message is large
enough to have the attachment, the attachment is an excel spreadsheet, and
everyone but those three OE users recieved it. Also, it's not just that one
attachment or email. I've tried Word docuemtns as well with the same result.
And, if I forward my copy of the email with the attachment, it is recieved
fine.

Check for the presence of winmail.dat on the messages in outlook - that's
the best way to determine if it's an RTF issue or something else. Also - if
the OE user hits forward, does the attachment show up?

For my clarification, why would this be an RTF issue if a) the outlook
sender is composing in HTML and b) other OE users, such as myself, receive
the attachment?

How do I check for the pressence of winmail.dat on the message?

I'll check to see what happens when it is forwarded from the OE account.

There is a per-contact setting that can override the composing format.
Perhaps the sender has that override in place for your address.
How do I check for the pressence of winmail.dat on the message?

Select the message in the Inbox, press CTRL-F3 to bring up the View Source
window and see if you find a couple of lines that look like this:

Content-Type: application/ms-tnef;
name="winmail.dat"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base6

Another check I did today:
On the Outlook account in question, I sent a plain text email w/attachment
to the OE user and it did receive fine.

Then I sent an HTML email w/attachment to the OE user and checked the
webmail server (we use Time Warner in a POP3/smtp setting) and on webmail the
attachment was the winmail.dat. When I checked OE, there was no attchment.

Another thing we noticed is that hyperlinks in the Outlook user's signature
don't display correctly. It shows the hyperlink within < > and also next to
it.

If I forward the email from the OE user to the OE user, it still does not
have the attachment.

drop-down at the bottom. If it does not contain "Let Outlook decide..."
change it so that it does.

Outlook Express ignores TNEF (winmail.dat) attachments.

Brian,

Only one of the 3 OE users is listed in her contact and it is set to "Let
Outlook Decide....". The other two auto-fill into the To box since she's
sent them enough emails to qualify for that feature.

Now, with knowing that plain text emails are received fine, can the Outlook
user set those the contacts to use plain text and therefore not have to worry
about changing from HTML to Plain Text when sending attachments?

Yes, if they're contacts. The Internet format drop-down has a "Send plain
text only" setting. My practice is to ALWAYS use Plain Text because rarely
does sending HTML add value to the information you're trying to convey.

Hi Everyone,

The problem is resolved. It appears to have been something with our
email/internet provider. We did have the same thing happen with another
Outlook user this weekend, however, when we started to troubleshoot this
morning, everything is working fine. The Outlook users can send in HTML and
the OE users recevie the attachment.

Was there ever a resolution to the hyperkink Issuewhich I also have or did it just 'go away'
