I have an Epson Perfection 2400 photo.

The problem is, most times when I start my computer, the scanner appears In
Control panel/System/Device Manager as ""Imaging Device", but sometimes,
when nothing has been changed, when I boot up it has gone from device
manager.

Any ideas?

Regards and thanks in advance

If you have the CD containing the driver try reloading it.

You didn't say what version of Windoze you have. With Win98SE it may be
necessary to have the scanner connected and turned on when booting the
computer, depending on what updates to the OS you have installed. On any
version older than Win98SE, the support for USB ports is limited and
generally flakey, or non-existent.

If you have WinXP, the behavior you describe is odd. I have a Perfection
1640 on WinXP, and never experience a problem. The scanner should show up
as a "Epson Perfection 2400" under Imaging Devices, not as a generic
"Imaging Device."

You might try updating your version of Windoze, and checking the Epson site
for updated drivers for your version of your OS. The only other sugestion
would be to reinstall Windoze. That is not fun, and only do it as a last
resort!

I'd guess that you have (had) two copies of the driver loaded at some stage.
Windows Device Manager is very helpful (!) about keeping track of devices
for you. Hence, when a scanner is first attatched, it gets a unique internal
ID assigned to it by Windows, and the relevent device class and driver are
associated with that ID. So if you try reloading the driver again, and let
Windows choose the device class and driver, you can end with a scanner that
appers under the Imaging Devices.

If the device shows up with an index other than 1 (rather than no index at
all), then that's what happened.

You can try
a) disconnecting the scanner, and run Add/Remove Hardware to remove the
scanner. Add Remove software to remove the Epson stuff.
b) disable and unload any Imaging Device or Epson scanner devices
c) reboot once to clear the driver cache, then reboot again with a clean
system

Now, reload the scanner software, connect the scanner and see where Device
Manager want to place it.
