Odd Outlook problem

In the last few days I've had several users experiencing an odd problem when
launching the Outlook client. We are running exchange server 2003 and we
have had the problem with both Outlook 2003 and 2007. When the user clicks
the Outlook icon the hourglass appears briefly and then nothing, when you
look in task manager there are multiple instances of Outlook running and if
you kill one then the client opens; also if the user logs out and then back
in it seems to work. There are NO errors in the application or system event
viewers on the local machine and none on the exchange server. Any thoughts?

It would appear something is holding the Outlook client open or running in
the background. The most likely culprits are: AV scanning incoming/outgoing
mail, antispam software, fax software, synch software (for a handheld), and
even having a handheld if it's cradled while Outlook is being closed. Also
check any Outlook COMs and Add Ins. Even desktop search tools have been known
to cause issues with Outlook.
