Odd Characters in Word Footer When Converted to Adobe .pdf

I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro to convert a 700+ page Word document to .pdf. I
used the styleref field in the Word footer to add the Chapter (Chapter
Heading style) and section (Heading 1 style) on each page to the footer and
it appears correctly in the Word document before conversion however, after
converted random characters appear randomly at the beginning of some of the
chapters and sections, but not in all of them.

So a footer that should read Chapter 17.04 Title, Purpose, Authority of
Zoning Title through Chapter 17.04 Title, Purpose, Authority of Zoning Title
now reads 640BUChapter 17.04 Title, Purpose, Authority of Zoning Title
through 640BUChapter 17.04 Title, Purpose, Authority of Zoning Title and a
section that should read 17.04.010 Title of the comprehensive zoning plan.
through 17.04.020 Purpose of the title now reads U17.04.010 Title of the
comprehensive zoning plan. through U17.04.020 Purpose of the title. Thank
you for any assistance you can provide.

I don't use Acrobat Pro so I can't help you with that. But why don't
you use the Word add-in to save a document as pdf? I would guess that
Microsoft is better at converting their own format than Acrobat is.

Thank you for the suggestion and your time. Sorry, I forgot to mention that
I am using Word 2003, and the add-in appears to only work with Word 2007.

I just found out that this is a known problem with Adobe Acrobat Professional
