Occasionally no http but always https

Good day all,
Occasionally I cannot go to a regular site (http) but can always go to a
secure site (httpS) using the latest version of IE.
This lasts for approx 10 minutes and clears itself up.
I have cleared cache, temp files, spyware, pop-up blockers, etc.
My laptop doesn't have the same problems connected to the same provider.
During this time I can FTP and do file transfers with no problems.
Any ideas?
It is time for a clean install but I would like to know why this is happening.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe :)

Three things to try if you can't get to some sites, but can get to others:

1. Clear your TIF and History completely:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

2. Check your Cookies folder and delete any cookies that relate to the
sites in question.

3. Check your C:\Windows\Hosts file as per this article:

Thanks Jan.
I really appreciate the info but I had already tried these things and it
still decides to only show secure sites once in a while. It's not specific
sites either. I've tried new sites that I've never been to on this sytems..
same problem.
I think that it's deeper than IE. I stuck in another NIC, shared the
connection and when non-secure sites are temp. unavailable on the host system
they are also unavailable on the client.
Then... magically... all is well for 20 minutes or so again. And the cycle
continues.
Driving me crazy. And it's s hort drive. ;)

Hi Joe :)

ou didn't mention the version of WIndows you are using. Try disabling the
NIC program totally and see if that helps. If so, then you know that it is
something in the Norton set up.

Also...do you have any 3rd party toolbars installed, such as Google or
Yahoo? Yahoo Companion? MSN Messenger? Zone Alarm Pro?

Hope this helps.

Sorry.. I'm running XP Pro.
I tried ripping out the nic and restarting without it.. same silliness.
I have removed an extra toolbar too and turned off the anti-virus app.
I guess I'll just bite the bullet and re-install.
Thanks for your suggestions. :)

You're very welcome! I'm sorry that you didn't get the problem resolved.
Good luck with the repair/reinstall.
