(O.T.) Request concerning 'Links to Freeware'

H

Henk de Jong

Due to some physical limitations that I experience in the last two
years I have to ask for some assistance in order to keep my site 'Links
to Freeware' up and running.

In the last two years I have a lot of troubles with both my arms and
shoulders. Those troubles make it almost impossible for me to spend
more than half an hour at a time behind my computer. Because I'm also
not able to work at this time, or to do something else here in our
house (there is still a staircase that needs some repainting), my site
is almost the only thing that keeps me occupied. But the time I can
spend to my site is because of the physical limitations to short to
keep the site in good shape.

In good shape means to me that I have the correct sites, with correct
url's and descriptions mentioned. To keep that 'in good shape' I need
to check all mentioned sites from time to time, in order to check for
the correct names, url's and descriptions. This is the most
time-consuming part (and for me the most physically difficult part) of
maintaining the site. I still want to have a site, dedicated to the
Freeware-community, with a lot of quality in the links that I offer on
my site.

When having read all the above I think you already can guess what I do
want to ask. Is there anyone that likes to assist me with checking the
links on my site?

Thanks.

With kind regards,

I am sorry to hear that Henk. Your site is awesome (one of the few sites
that still has DOS and Windows 3.1) I'd be more than happy to help. Just
tell me how. I can mirror all or a portion of the links or the whole site?
What do you need?

I would but I checked your site and I don't see the point in it. It's
just links to sites that have freeware on them. You don't say what
freeware they have on them, or describe it, or review it. You just say
there's freeware there. So what are people meant to use your site for?

Hi Henk

A suggestion:
- create one big webpage with all the links at it (no layout, no
pictures,etc.. only links)
- give each link an unique number (that's easier than the whole URL)
- each link opens in a new window
eg. <a href="http://www.caiman.us" target="_BLANK">105 - Caiman</a><br>

If you can do that then I will check all the links for you.

If you cannot create such a link list (no database or so), I will write a
small program for you that can create the link listing.

note: Such a webpage is also very good for elimanating the broken links by
XenuLinks or so.
(xenulinks is available at the caiman site too)

I check my gamesite daily for broken download links and this takes only 5
minutes.
Look at http://www.caiman.be/Linktest/Linktest.html for an example link
list (an old one)
Sometimes I checks all the links manually, but even that takes only 2 hours
with such a list.

Hope this helps,
Rudy
http://www.caiman.us ( >1000 free games)

PS: Xenulinks or so can check your whole website at once too, but manually
checking is very difficult without a link list.

Hello Henk,

A suggestion for *one* of your site maintainance chores. . .

Many ACF participants have web sites with freeware links.

I think broken link updates might be a good project to do on-list - many
people could contribute and many could benefit..

Would it be possible for you to post a list of your non-working links -
say once a week or so?

If you posted such a list it would be fairly easy for me to check that
against the links I have on the Program Information pages - then if I
managed to locate an updated link I could post the new link for the
benefit of you and others - and update the Program Info pages at the
same time.

Do you think something like this might work? be a help?

I realize that only addresses a small part of the update process - still
thinking about the other chores. . .

Susan

I'd be glad to help. I have some physical problems myself (although not
serious) so I can sympathize. You can email me at

enjoyed your "Links to Freeware" so it seems a small thing to do to give
something back.

Hi,

Thanks for your kind words and your offer to help. What I ask is, IMHO,
easy to do: when you enter my site just check some pages for: the
right name (some sites change their name once in a while), the right
url (sometimes sites change their url and have a redirectionpage which
directs you to the new url), the right description of the site (and you
are invited to suggest a better description if you think that mine is
incorrect), and sometimes the number of 'dots' need an update. When you
think that the mentioning of certain sites needs to be changed, just
mail them to me, and when I agree I'll change that particular link. And
by the way, when you have any ideas how to improve the site, don't
hesistate to mention them to me, and we'll discuss your suggestion.

Is this according your own ideas about how we could do this? Please let
me know.

With kind regards,

Hi Rudy,

Yhanks for your suggestions, but I think it's rather straightforward:
checking the links for the correct names, url's and descriptions.
Checking if a link still works is done by using Xenu. Only that doesn't
give me the guarantee that the names and the descriptions, and even the
url's, are correct.

The best way, IMHO, to do this job is to enter a particular page on my
site, and check the links mentioned there for correct names,
descriptions and so on. For what I mean exactly, check my answer to the
post of *ProteanThread*.

Would it be possible for you to post a list of your non-working links - say

Every time I update my site I post a message in the three freeware ng's
about the new, updated and removed links from my site. Not only the
nemes are mentioned by me, but also the (known by me) url's of those
sites. Sometimes some readers give me the new url's of those sites, and
after that I add them again to my list.
If you posted such a list it would be fairly easy for me to check that

It's not only the url's that worry me. Also the names and the
descriptions of the site change. And that is mainly what I'm after. The
url's are checked with Xenu, and that works to a certain level, because
I cannot see which pages are redirected. A one-by-one check of the
sites mentioned on my pages maybe overcomes that problem.

Henk,... ik kan je niet helpen om je site up to date te houden wezens
zelf veel werk met m'n site maar ik merk wel dat je een link hebt
gelegd naar mijn site. Dank je voor de 4/5 rating. Je schrijft ook: "A
lot of freeware utilities and applications on this (IMHO) little hard
to navigate site". Hoe denk je IYHO dat ik mijn navigatie zou moeten
verbeteren? ZIjn het de feitenlijk dubbele navigatiemogelijkheden die
verwarrend overkomen?

Ik leg natuurlijk ook een link naar jou website.
Verzorg je maar goed...

I read your response to *Protean Thread* and it sounds good to me. Can we
organize this a bit? Your site is divided into sections--perhaps we
volunteers can each take a section, or part of a section, so that we don't
go crashing into each other and leave some links unchecked.

Anyone? I'm open to ideas.

I still don't get the point. Instead of listing every site why don't you
list every program and link them to the right site?

Well, that is a great suggestion, but I think that it is impossible to
list *all* freeware programs on one site. There are already some great
sites that contain a lot of freeware (links) but they don't have them
all. (See for instance FreewareHome, FreewareArena, SnapFiles, NoNags,
etc.).

What I have tried to do is to provide the links to freewaresites, that
contain at least two freeware objects (programs, components,
screensavers and so on) for all platforms. One might say "Use Google
for that", but my experience is that there is also a lot of 'rubbish'
in the links from Google. With providing the links to freeware sites I
try to avoid those rubbish.

About the descriptions of the sites on my pages, I must say that there
is a lot to improve. After a few years that I started this site, I
added those descriptions, and what I did at that time wasn't the best
thing to do. When you take a look at my recent descriptions, you can
see that I try to mention the programs provided on the sites. But that
has its limitations. Listing all programs on FreewareHome is a
neverending story, so instead of mentioning all programs I give them a
higher rating to illustrate the importance of that site.

What you don't find on my site are those sites that provide only one
freeware object. The number of sites that have only one program on it,
is far more than the links that I have on my list. That is an almost
impossible to do task for me. But wen you have some time left? :) :)

With kind regards,

Henk,... ik kan je niet helpen om je site up to date te houden wezens
zelf veel werk met m'n site maar ik merk wel dat je een link hebt
gelegd naar mijn site. Dank je voor de 4/5 rating. Je schrijft ook: "A
lot of freeware utilities and applications on this (IMHO) little hard
to navigate site".

behouden blijft.

Met vriendelijke groet,

I read your response to *Protean Thread* and it sounds good to me. Can we
organize this a bit? Your site is divided into sections--perhaps we
volunteers can each take a section, or part of a section, so that we don't
go crashing into each other and leave some links unchecked.

Anyone? I'm open to ideas.

Hi Thip,

Can you mail me, please? My email adress is in my sig. (Remove

It's not only the url's that worry me. Also the names and the
descriptions of the site change. And that is mainly what I'm after. The
url's are checked with Xenu, and that works to a certain level, because
I cannot see which pages are redirected. A one-by-one check of the sites
mentioned on my pages maybe overcomes that problem.

Not sure I understand what you mean about Xenu. Xenu does report on
redirected links if you tell it to. . . .

Thanks for your kind words and your offer to help. What I ask is, IMHO,
easy to do: when you enter my site just check some pages for: the right
name (some sites change their name once in a while), the right url
(sometimes sites change their url and have a redirectionpage which
directs you to the new url), the right description of the site (and you
are invited to suggest a better description if you think that mine is
incorrect), and sometimes the number of 'dots' need an update. When you
think that the mentioning of certain sites needs to be changed, just
mail them to me, and when I agree I'll change that particular link. And
by the way, when you have any ideas how to improve the site, don't
hesistate to mention them to me, and we'll discuss your suggestion.

To make the "report cards" easier to send you could put a link button at
the bottom of each page - either with an email address
(mailto:links@______) or linked to a web page as SOS does:

Broken Links
http://www.sover.net/~wysiwygx/Guestbook.html

a web page would let you tell people what kind of information you would
like to have. . .
