(O.T.) My 'Links to Freeware' page

H

Henk de Jong

I'll expect that I reach the number of 1800 links on my pages within a
few weeks. At this moment I'm worried that that number of links
decreases the usability of the site. A problem in this is that my ISP
(where I have my pages for free) doesn't support PHP, MySQL, CGI, PERL,
and so on. The only things they support are Javascript, DHTML and HTML.
As far as I have seen there are no other ISP's anymore that carry PHP,
MySQL and so on, for free and without any advertising. So, improvements
of my site are limited. And I don't want to move my site to an other
location.

But, nevertheless, a few questions:
- does somebody have any ideas for improving the site?
- does anybody know of a easy-to-use search-possibility for my site?
- does anybody have any ideas for the design and/or layout of the site?

I like to hear your comments.

With kind regards,

Maybe you can include an external search engine to your site. A friend of me
uses Atomz Free Search (http://www.atomz.com/applications/search/).

An improvement could be to include a listing by category (Games, Tools,
Wallpapers etc.), not only an alphabetical one.

Best regards,
Romain

With kind regards,
Henk - you have a very excellent site as is, but a search can be easily
added with Google's free onsite search script. For an example, look at:

Have you ever considdered to use another web-hoster than your ISP? Here in
Denmark we have some quite good ones that supports PHP, MySQL and if you
don't want to pay for hosting and don't need a domain of your own, there are
free alternatives.

My HP is placed on a sub-domain of www.frac.dk, and it doesn't cost me a
sqrimp :)

Write me a mail if you want me to help you finding some good stuff.

I tried that one before, but that gave no good results of the search of
my site. I would like a search possibilty that also gives the name and
the url of the site the visitor is looking for. The Atomz search only
shows the page where you can find what you are looking for.
An improvement could be to include a listing by category (Games, Tools,

I have already a Games section on my pages. The other sections are:
Screensavers, Programming, Mac, Linux, Win 3.xx, PDA and DOS. I used to
have a Graphics section in the past, that also contained wallpapers,
but according the counter of the number of visitors, there was almost
no interest for that.

I use JavaScript Indexer:

It works great. I changed it a little, but if you want to have an idea of
it, look at my site:

This looks interesting. Thanks. I'll check it out!

That reminds me that I have a page with the Google search on it
somewhere on my HD.

Thanks for reminding me :)

Yes, that is already on my to-do list. But my first priority is to add
all the links I have 'in stock' and after that I'll review the links
pages, add the usable links to the regular pages, and delete the links
pages from the site. I'm also thinking of a 'redesign' of the site, but
my brother-in-law just returned from vacation, and I didn't have time
to talk to him about this. But it is also on my to-do list.

Yes, I have considered a change of ISP, but the one I use now is for
free. I even have the domainname for free with them. Another point is
that they support my freewaresite completely. That is a thing that
cannot be said by other ISP's. I once lost my account with another ISP,
that accused me of offering illegal software. For now, I'm very happy
with my current ISP and I like to stay there. In spite of their
limitations....
