(Maybe O.T.) About freeware and shareware in ACF

H

Henk de Jong

Since a couple of weeks now, I use the ACF links summary, posted by
Mark Carter every day on his own news server, for finding links to new
freeware sites.

Every day I am surprised by the number of links to shareware sites
and/or shareware applications in his list. I checked the links to those
shareware stuff with the real messages in ACF, and they matched. I
cannot conclude anything else, but that ACF is more and more 'infected'
with links to shareware sites and/or applications.

Without trying to start some kind of a 'war' in here, I would like to
ask the posters in here (and also the 'regulars') to check first if an
application or utility is freeware or shareware, and to post only the
freeware ones.

Thank you.

With kind regards,

I'm with you on that.

and. . .

if diligent, careful posters start adding the ware type after the name
of an app - like so:

GREAT APP (Liteware)

then. . .

careless posts would be easier to spot. . .

some of the thatisn'tfreeware/yesitislookagainyouidiot posts would be
eliminated. . .

it would help me too - of course *that* did not even enter my thinking
when I came up with this absolutely brilliant suggestion. . . ;)

A lot of people ask: "Is there a freeware alternative for such and such
application?". Maybe this contributes to "shareware applications in his
list"?

What percentage of those are strictly shareware sites not containing any
freeware versions?

Most people who ask for alternatives to a shareware app don't post
links to the shareware.

Also true Freeware is becoming harder to find. Many times I'll check a
site that offers a freeware program. I'll start to add it to my
freeware newsletter. Only to find when I go the the authors website.
That the program is either, a lite version that is crippled, or that
they also offer a shareware version. Or that the program is really
shareware. It seems more and more sites that post freeware. Don't take
the time to actually see if it is true freeware, by going to the
author's website.
