I just discovered a locked folder C:\Program Files\xerox\nwwia
(date 3 January 2008) on my system.

Googling suggests that it is a well-known phenomenon and this page
explains how to get rid of it:
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1063931130>, but I'm
surprised that it doesn't appear to have been discussed here
before, and I'm intrigued how it ended up on my system in the first
place.

Why would it have been discussed here
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support) at all - much less before now?
(This is a newsgroup originally created to assist people with the "Help and
Support" feature included with Windows XP.)

It has appeared on various newsgroups and forums over the 7+ years it has
existed (XEROX and XEROX\NWWIA folders) - so my bet is that it does exist
either in this newsgroup or a parent newsgroup.

Not sure what harm it was doing either. Likely none - nore was it taking up
much (if any) of the space. ;-)

Thanks for the clarification - I wasn't aware of the original purpose of
this group.

Fair enough - I just like my PC to be as clean as possible, and I'm not
too keen on these little oddities ;-)

Kind regards

yes, it has been discussed
before and the responses
i have seen is are:

"leave it alone. its a vital
system file, etc..."

unfortunately, it is not
a vital system file nor
is it easily removed.

when i had a zerox printer
a number of years ago, that
pesky folder got created and
in fact had a number of files
used by the printer.

but later, i had communicated
with a zerox tech regarding
dysfunctional printer drivers
when i upgraded the o.s..

he couldn't help me with the
drivers but as a courtesy sent
me detailed instructions on how
to remove that folder.

i recall it required some file renaming,
deletions, a couple of cold reboots
and the safemode.

it was pretty involved and the
instructions were pretty long and
detailed.

however, i was able to remove it.

unfortunately, i reinstalled the zerox
printer drivers before throwing the
printer away, just as a last ditch
effort to see if the drivers would
work, and the darn folder popped
up again.

the zerox software program that
installed the drivers was a complex
one as well.

in addition to printing it also had
page scanning, ocr, sharing,
networking, emailing etc..

unfortunately, i can no longer
find the instructions and
the old email no longer exists
for me as well.

as far as trying to delete it
without the exact instructions
from zerox, forget it.

i mean you can delete the
folder, but it will be recreated
by the o.s..

more than a farce.

sure!

but it wasn't really a
warning.

perhaps, i should have
explained it a bit better

the steps provided in those
pages can work on other
persistent files but in regards
to this from zerox, they are
futile.

it surely wouldn't hurt
to try them out and practice
such techniques, that is
if you didn't have anything
better to do.

------

just out of curiosity i logged
into my old zerox account and
emailed them again for the
instructions.

but again, zerox is unresponsive
because it no longer holds a place
as a respectable business.
