Nvidia changed screen resolution to 1600x1400

A Nvidia update downloaded yesterday from Windows Update
(as critical update together with security patches)
changed the screen resolution on my laptop LCD screen to
1600x1400 and does not allow going back to a lower
resolution. What kind of update is this, and how do I get
back a sensible, readable resolution for a laptop screen?
(Lower resolutions are now claimed to be "not optimal" for
my screen, and are very fuzzy, so it returns to
1600x1400). Thanks very much fir any help!

Boot into safe mode then change it to a setting that works
