numlock revisited

I have a Dell Latitude running XP. I installed QVT-Term and, for some
inexplicable reason, numlock is now on. I removed QVT-Term. Still
on, whenever I boot.

The machine is *not* infected with a virus.

I can edit InitialKeyboardIndicators in both registry places, as
discussed here and on M$'s website; it doesn't matter, when I reboot
it's set back to 2.

I created the little vbs script that toggles NUMLOCK; it works when I
run it. However, it doesn't work when I put it in my startup folder,
or in the "All users" folder.

I would just like to turn the d*mn thing off. Permanently.

How?

When you reboot, hit F2 to enter the BIOS setup. You should be able to set
Num Lock to OFF there... permanently.

That didn't work for me! My BIOS is set to not enable
number lock, but windows still turns it on.

To have numbers lock on at bootup:
Click staart---run---type in regedit--clik ok
Go to HKEY_USERS\Default\control panel\keyboard
Set keyboard indicator to 2.

You're talking about this:

Did that. Doesn't work, as I said.

My BIOS says this only pertains to when I have an external keyboard
connected. Should I disbelieve that? I didn't try it...
