My doc including the first 4 pages is 48 pages long, but I don't want the
numbpage to count the first 4 pages. I want the doc to end normally - Page 44
of 44. Can anyone help?

If you used a section break to separate the first four pages from the
remaining 44 pages, then go to Print Layout view, double-click the
footer, press Alt+F9 to display field codes, replace the NUMPAGES field
with a SECTIONPAGES field, press Alt+F9 to display field results, and
click on Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.

You might instead use a calculated field

{Page} of {={Numpages} - 4}

but if the first four pages might 'grow' then the calculation will not take
account of the difference.
