I want to type 20 vocabulary words and then copy and
paste them to another sheet where I will sort them. That
will give me two vocab tests. Will Excel number them
after I have typed them?

Can you rephrase the question? I'm not understanding...
If they are words, why would Excel "number" them? And what do you mean by
numbering them?
How will copying words to another sheet give you "two" tests?

Sory I was not clear. I want to take a list of words and
make two tests. I do not want the words to be in the
same order on the two tests. I have started with A left
blank for the student to write the answer. In B I have
typed 20 different subjects. In C I have typed 20
different infinitives. I did not number them because I
knew when I sorted them that I would have to renumber. I
was hoping to be able to type the list of words and them
number them. I can do it manually, but I thought there
might be an easier way.

AFter you've sorted, insert a column on the left. In that column, type 1
before the first word. Then select that cell. In the lower right corner of its
border you'll see a small black square. Put the mouse over that square so the
mouse cursor turns into a plus sign or cross. Hold the mouse button down and
drag down to fill with consecutive numbers. Or select the cell with the 1 and
the 19 cells below it, then Edit/Fill/Series, and click OK.

I see. In addition to Myrna's response, which works well, you could put a 1
in the first cell, and then put (for example) =A1+1 in the cell underneath
and copy that down.

You know, I think she could have typed in all of the 40 numbers manually in
less time that she spent on writing the ng messages <vbg>.
