numbering appendices' paragraphs and figures in Word

I am writing a technical document to conform to the standard that the body of
the text is numbered 1, 2, 3 with subsections 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and so on. The
figures are to be numbered according to their section but not their
subsection, thus 'Figure 1-1', 'Figure 2-1' and so on. The Appendices are to
be designated as Appendix A, Apeendix B, with subsections A.1, B.1 and so on,
and figures 'Figure A-1' for example.
How do I do it? I need this explained at the level of every keystroke. My
skills are in developing aeroplanes and spacecraft, not in deciphering menus.

the appendix part of it. For the figures themselves, it's a simple matter of
using "Include chapter number," with the qualification that the chapter
number must be the auto paragraph number of one of Word's built-in heading
styles (see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm).
