Numbered list format differences

Phil

I have noticed some differences between Word 2007 and 2003. I had a document
I created with W2007 that had a numbered list (left justify) with left tabs
on the right side of the page connected by dots, as a table of contents. I
saved the document as Word 2003 and the numbered list changed to tabs with
dots at the right side of the page and the numbers still on the left. I was
saving as word 2003 for compatibility with other users who do not have 2007
or the compatibility patch. Not a major problem but I am just curious if
anyone has had similar problems. I have not noticed too many differences
between 2007 and 2003, but this is pretty extreme.

I'm not sure I understand your description of how the formatting changes...

Have you made sure that you haven't inadvertently enabled a right-to-left
language in the document?

I created a numbered list, the first order number with text like a heading,
hit TAB and the cursor moved to the right side of the page @ the 5.5" mark
where I enter a date. The next level is bullets. When I save as 2003 .doc the
text after all the first order numbers are tabbed to the right side of the
page and the rest of the text is moved down. Tried opening in 2003 even with
the converter pack installed and we get the same result.

I fixed the document by saving as a 2003 .doc format and opening this copy in
word2007 with hidden format marks shown. Word 2003 interpreted the space
after the first level list number as a tab and applied the 5.5" tab to it
instead of keeping it with the number. I deleted the incorrect tabs and
recreated them at the correct locations. The title text was at the right side
of the page where the date should have been and the date was on the next line
at the right side of the page with the leading dots as though it was tabbed.

I now need to find if word2007 will create documents with 2003 formatting,
since some of the formatting is not the same between the versions. This is
just not right.

It sounds like there might have been a font change from that in W2007, or
some such, that caused the list number in W2003 to extend beyond the first
tab so that the order description was shoved to the right margin (with the
leader dots in front of it), and the following information to the next line.

Try making sure the font is the same, allowing more space after the list
number in W2007, or reducing the point size in W2003. There are probably
other options.

Note that when you are modifying numbered lists, it will be safer to define
the indentation and tab stops in the numbering dialog box, not in the style
definition. Also, these settings must be specified for each level
separately.

This probably reflects a change in the Compatibility Option that governs
whether a tab stop is set at the hanging indent position in numbered lists.
Without that tab stop, the tab after the number will go to the next existing
tab stop.
