number of files

Jim Macklin

Running Windows XP Pro Build 2600 xpsp2 030422-1633 (service
Pack 1)
Maxtor 80 GB hard drive 4 partitions. All NTFS, set to show
hidden and system files.
MS Office Pro.

McAfee virus scan set to scan all files shows 111153 files
after a full scan of My Computer.
AdAware 6.181 shows 267257 files after a full scan.

Disk clean up was run and system restore points also cleaned
up a few re-boots ago.

Does system restore account for the "extra files" or is
there something else that could cause this?

Hi Jim,

Mcafee set to not scan certain files/file types?

Nope, set to scan all files, no exclusions. Everything runs
fine, I was just wondering about this. I understand NTFS
"logs" all disk activity and wondered about that? Also, it
is possible that AdAware is seeing inside dlls and counting
those and McAfee isn't????

Hi Jim,

I think it's more in the way the each classifies a "file". For instance,
AdAware may classify a .zip file with 100 zipped files within as 101 files,
whereas Mcafee may classify that as only 1 file. I don't think, as far as I
can tell, that either would count as .dll file as anything more than just 1.

Thanks, I'll quit worrying about it. Maybe I'll take
sometime over the holiday to see if either Lavasoft or
McAfee has any FAQ on this.

I'm running Ad-aware 6.0, the count shown is of "objects" not just
files. It includes registry values/keys. So would push the count up.

It *might* be a matter of not scanning protected mode files if they were
hidden. Or it might be a matter of not scanning into stored restore
points on the grounds that they could not be any active viruses there.
And again, treating a stored up restore point in a cab as a single file
for the count. But it is difficult to see these ideas, even all
together, accounting for such a large discrepancy. I would not these
days allow McAfee within a mile of my system, so it is difficult to say

It is just an idle question...McAfee has worked well for me.
I have hidden and system files set to show. File extensions
are set to show.
Maybe someday I'll email McAfee and AdAware support and ask
them the question.

Thanks Alex,

Doesn't Adaware class individual registry entries as "files"?

As Steve's post said - it counts Objects. I just did a check on mine
(which is a fairly complex registry) and at the end of the scan of
registry it has got to about 56000 'objects'. So that is a significant
contribution, but does not look like enough to account for this
discrepancy
