Number of Files or Size of web "Front Page could not Parse"

Steve, what about with FP2003 and the message I keep getting (just started
happening within the last two days): "The server sent a response which Front
Page could not parse. If your trying to connect to a Windows SharePoint
Services server, check with the servers administrator to make sure Windows
SharePoint services are installed properly."

My hosting company is telling me: "Frontpage's built-in FTP system has a
really hard time publishing files that are large. Most of the time, the error
you see is due to Frontpage "giving up" on the upload. This only occurs to
those who have large sites or large files going through Frontpage."

the largest file I have is 17+mb (mp3).

Any thoughts....

No, there is no limit.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download a copy of
FP cleaner.
Run the Functions that:
Clear the FrontPage Temporary files.
Clear the Cache(*.web) files.

When it's done open your web and click Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks.
It might take quite a while with a web that size.

When it's done republish your problem pages.

There is a limit to file size, and FP has difficulty with / won't publish
files over 1 mb in size.

The option is to open your site in FTP mode in the browser ( not FP ) and
then drag and drop the file from your machine to the server.

In the IE address bar ftp://yoursite.com
When it opens click File > Log in as... and then enter your user name and
password.
When the site opens ( it will be in folder view ) browse to the folder where
you want the file to live and then drag from your machine and drop into the
folder in the IE window. When prompted select "Copy here..."

Go get a cup of coffee because it may take a few minutes.

Steve,

my confusion is that I have been using FP 2003 with this hosting company and
publishing files like this with minimal problems until recently when it
started with the message I mentioned in the last post. What would cause it
to start "hiccuping" after such a long use (march 2006)? I will attempt to
use the directives below, but wonder if I will loose links by this method
from my local copy to the live copy? Thanks for your time and effort with
this, and I am dissappointed, as I made a fool out of myself with my hosting
company, because it was working since 2006 and in the last two days it just
stopped. Weird.... Well nothing like eating crow.... thanks and I look
forward to your response.

The error message often occurs when the conditions (server loading,
hardware, network connections and so on) are such that the server times
out. This could be reported as a time out or as a "...could not
parse..." message.

You may find that publishing on Sunday morning will give no problems,
but other times always result in errors ...

As Ronx stated, there are many factors, any one of which could be causing
the problem
involving both your hosting server and even your ISP.

Even though, if you've been publishing files that large with no problems
you've been lucky, because FP ( all versions ) has always had problems with
large files and server time outs.
There are many theories as to why.

If the page with the link is published, when you drop the file on the server
using IE, the link will work.

I wouldn't say you made a fool of yourself. There are many "server side"
factors that could cause this.
Hosting companies love to pass it off as a FrontPage issue because it's an
easy answer
Especially hosting companies running non windows servers.

A way to "get arround" the links etc not being right is to make sure that
your development subdirectory uses exactly the same file paths as the
server. This means instead of developing in "my_doc\my_web" you need to be
developing in "\Inetpub\website-physicalname" assuming your on a windows
server and that is the physical path.

This deals with the fact that FP performs "conversions" when it uses the
http connectivity and may even do that when it uses the ftp
connectivity..... to make the links correct at the server.

Thanks,
Tom Miller
