Number Lock not auto-locked in windows after installed sp3

P

Peter

Last week, I updated to sp3 via windows update and the process during
updating was smooth and easy. However, the number lock of my Microsoft
Internet Keyboard didn't light up in windows automatically. I'm now need to
press the number lock key every time when I started to load windows. Pls help
me to fix this annoying problem.

OS: XP Pro SP3
Intel 915 chipset

The number lock lighted during POST and turned off when started to load
windows.

TIA

Check the BIOS for a setting.

Thanks Mike,
I've already checked the BIOS setting and the number lock is enabled. I've
also mentioned that the number lock lighted up during POST and only turned
off when windows started to load. Any clue?

TIA

No, sorry. That was my one bullet.

No, sorry. That was my one bullet.

It has been previously posted that every version of Windows NT (NT,
2000, XP, 2003 and VISTA) is ignoring the BIOS setting for the Num
Lick key setting.

Some MVPs have posted a start-up procedure which would set the Num
Lock state. Please check the history in the general XP newsgroup.

Thanks to all of you.
I have downloaded and run the script from kellys-korner of no clue. I still
needed to press the number lock key manually every time I started to load
windows.
Is there any other way to work around?

TIA

Thanks for the heads-up.

Here is a site with more details:

Set Numlock State on Startup

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators

0 = numberlock off
2 = numberlock on

If you want the numlock on at the welcome screen you also need to
change:

HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators
same number values as above.

Peter

Thank you smlunatick,

I have run regedit and changed the value from 0 to 2 in HKEY
USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators
The problem solved after a reboot.

I am having the same trouble with WindowsXP SP2 and it is very annoying. My Bios has Num Lock Enabled but Windows XP is shutting it off upon re-boot.

If you have any information on how to correct this I would appreciate it!

Thank you kindly,

Windows ignores the BIOS setting. Enable it with the Numlock key and
it should remain set on rebooting.

Do you use a secure card reader, some of these readers software attempts to
enable the numlock on boot. On my computer I had to turn it off in the bios
so the reader software would turn it on automatically when it prompted for
logon pin.

No, and I'm not the one with the question. Please reply to the
original poster, not just to any post in the thread.

Humm, seems to be some anger here. Might be time for you to take your meds,
don't know about you but I'm stuck with outlook express on my work PC which
has serious problems with providing all the threads and now only spell
checks in french so please, think before...as an MVP, you respond.

Anger? Not at all. I was simply pointing out a netiquette standard.
