NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction

Within moments, whenever I log into IE6, I encounter a Blank DOS screen (16
bit MS DOS Subsystem).
This is followed by an error message "NTVDM has encountered an illegal
instruction, etc.....
I have taken the following steps to try and resolve the problem but have had
no luck.
1. Ran a virus check
2. Ran Spy Sweeper
3. Reloaded IE6
4. Reduced "START UP" and "Services" to a bare minimum
The problem still continued

I even installed Netscape 7 to try and isolate the problem. Netscape ran
OK, however as soon as I get back to IE the problem comes up again.
It is as if though IE is executing some background routine that is causing
the problem.

I do not want to reload XP (Pro) as that would wipe out my system.

Help!!!

Yes, I do have Java installed.
Is there something I should be looking for that would give me a clue as to
whether this is a problem.
I have XP pro at work with IE and Java and do not have this problem.

Appreciate your help!

I believe I am one step closer to resolving the problem.
I have tracked it down to 2 execuatables. kwarkc.exe and nhgtni.exe. I
have deleted them from the sytem and everything works OK. Then for some
reason the problem comes back and when I look for the above files they are
back.
I have tried to get rid of them through 3 different spyware and adware
programs but they don't do it. I have also deleted them from the Registry
and they still come back.
I can not find any reference to the 2 executables anywhere on the web and in
the properties screen they don't list the company.
Any suggestions as to how I could get rid of them.

I am positive these are the ones causing the problem.

It sounds very much like you have at least one virus on your system. You
didn't say what av you scanned with. If you have a current version (not
earlier than 2003) av using updated virus definitions installed on your
hard drive, scan again in Safe Mode. If your av is not current or you
do not have a full-featured av installed and perhaps used an online
scanner, run TrendMicro's Sysclean as follows:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

Run all antivirus and antispyware tools in Safe Mode when trying to
clean a pc.

Hi everyone,

Ok, I have a similar problem, when I startup my pc, and the tray icons have finished to open, I receive the very same error message... a Blank DOS screen (16 bit MS DOS Subsystem), followed by an error message "NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction, etc.....

But I have noticed that it only happens if I’m connected to the internet (I have a cable connection), if I startup my pc unconnected I have no problems.

Could somebody help me??? is it a virus???

I received this message since I had to uninstall my AV, ´cause it was interfering with my Age of empires III installation, I have MS XP.

Thanks.
