I helped a fellow with the The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal
instruction error and running system File Checker fixed the problem for him.

Click Start | Click Run | Paste this in the Run box...

sfc /scannow

Then click OK.

It should take a while to run.

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection

Hi,

Close all running programs. Locate ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe in the
\Windows\System32 folder and delete them (one or both are probably corrupt).
Reboot the system. See if the problem goes away, as the files will be
replaced by ones from the system cache (System File Protection at work).

I would first try expanding those files from the \i386 folder on th
windows cd onto the ones you have in your \system32 folder it wil
replace them with the original ones. This way is probably a lot easie
than deleting and restarting and such.

open up a command prompt (start-->run-->"cmd"-->enter)
then enter the command as follows where D:\ is the drive letter of you
cd drive.

Code
-------------------
expand D:\i386\ntvdm.ex_ C:\windows\system32\ntvdm.ex
-------------------

Do that for the other file too.

If you ever have this sort of thing happen to you while trying to us
ping, go into the system32 folder and delete ping.co
