under c:\windows have several folders labeled $Ntuninstallkbxxxxxxxx$ and
one folder labeled $xpsp1hfm$ with several subfolders.

Not sure what they are and if needed?

Thanks,

L.

Hello,

These files are the Windows Update files that where
download and installed on your computer. The folder that
you see as well is for Service Pack 1 that was installed
as well on your computer. You do need these files and if
you do delete them, Windows XP will cease to function. If
you are having an issue with Windows XP after installing a
service pack, you can remove it from the Add/Remove
Programs under the Control Panel.

Thanks for the input.
I didn't notice these files when I was running win98se. Notice they are also
in add/remove.

Will leave them be.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the Windows Update
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

The Uninstall folders were created by windows update when certain
patches are added. The number corresponds to the knowledge base # for
that update. These directories are created to allow you to uninstall
the update if a problem arises. They are also listed in the add/remove
programs section of control panel which is where you would go to remove
the update if you wanted to. If things are working fine after the
update you can, if you want, delete these uninstall folders to save
space. Be aware however, that you will not be able to remove the update
once it's corresponding uninstall folder is removed.

Not all updates are removable so they don't all creat an uninstall folder.

Don't know about the othe folder.

I disagree; the folders in question are uninstall folders created when
Updates are applied to the machine. These folders may be deleted; however,
doing so would make the Update impossible to uninstall in the future. The
entry in Add/Remove programs would remain, as well. AFAIK, deleting these
folders would not adversely affect the installation of the OS other than the
way mentioned above.
