NTLDR missing

I too am getting the run-around when booting Win XP sp2....NTLDR missing. I
put a boot disk into my floppy and was able to boot into Windows as usual,
but now have no CD-ROM support, so cannot get files from the XP CD to repair
the problem. Is there somewhere I can d/l the required i386\ntldr file? I
have also just d/l'ed the 6 disk setup disks for WinXP Pro sp2 from
Microsoft, but do not know where, or if this required file would be on one of
them?

Hi

If you have a slipstreamed SP2 CD:

Try this:

Boot with your XP CD in the cd drive. Select 'To repair..' by pressing 'R'.
When in the Recovery Console type the following:

"copy X:\i386\ntldr C:\" - without the quotes. Where X is the letter ofyour
CD drive and C is the letter of your system drive. Take the XP CD out
of the cd drive and reboot into XP normally:

I tried to boot with my SP1 CD in (don't know if it's slipstreamed?), but it
would not complete the bootup. The 5th disk of the setup disk from Microsoft
won't work, so setupt fails. I tried with my old single disk floppy, pushing
F8 to boot into safe mode, but it just keeps on booting into winXP...still
with no CD-ROM support.

Buddy try with SP2 cd, not with SP1....forget SP1 now...
Also, SP2 contains updates of SP1..

The install CD for Windows XP is bootable. Put into your CD/DVD drive,
reboot, and boot using the CD. Then use the Repair option during setup
(the first Repair puts you into Recovery Console mode so you need to
select the second Repair option when it is presented).

Hi

You need to create a slipstreamed SP2 CD:

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:

then follow the directions in the following article to create a slipstreamed
XP CD:

http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

I cannot get it to boot from the CD period. WHen I boot up with the CD in
the drive, it does a few things, but will not finish booting. I can't make
aslipstreamed disk, because my computer will not recognize my CD-ROM drives.
I am so frustrated. Is there no way of fixing it in any other way...I don't
want to reformat!!!

A "few things"? What might those be? Can't tell how far in the boot
process you are getting from that description. Does the setup program
from the bootable CD even start? If the CD drive is not getting used at
all as a boot device, you need to configure the boot drive sequence in
your BIOS to use the CD drive.

When you boot and get at the end of the BIOS POST where it shows CPU
speed, memory size, and detected drives, is the CD drive listed in the
table of drives? To what is the CD drive connected (IDE, SATA, SCSI)?

You probably need to set your computer to boot from the cd drive. Do
this by entering the BIOS setup. When you first start your computer,
you'll see a message at the bottom of the screen that says something
like, "Press DEL to enter Setup". What key you press depends on your
motherboard, but it will tell you. Once you are in Setup, you will need
to find the Boot Order options. Change it so the cd drive is first,
hard drive is second, and the third can be a floppy or removable
device. Save your settings and exit Setup. Now your computer should
boot from the cd drive.

OK...I have been able to boot for the original XP CD-ROM (not slipstreamed
though)...and I have got into the recovery console without problem...I have
entered copy f:\i386\ntldr C:, the file has copied and I have rebooted with
no disks at all...still get NTLDR missing message, so I rebooted with CD-ROM
again, but copied the file to the C:\windows directory, and rebooted
again...same thing!!!!!
As I heard that this message can be caused by a majorly fragmented HD, I
defragged earlier in the day. The only thing I can think of that I've done
in the last 2 days to have caused this was to install a windows update (I
have no clue which one, just the one it said I needed).
For all intents and purposes the computer runs fine booting from the floppy,
but I have no CD-ROM support, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how
to boot from the rescue disk and have CD-ROM support.
What is the Automated System Recovery and, if that would help, where do I
get that to put onto a floppy?
I have no idea what to do...what now?

The saga continues.
After all else failed, I installed bcupdate2...now I can boot up properly.
But, my DVD & DVD burner still did not show up in My Computer (they were
there before I got into this mess). So I ran 'Restore CD/DVD in Explorer:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs. My 2 drives
are listed now, but it will not read from my DVD burner drive. No matter
what disk I put in there, it prompts me to insert a disk.
I am ready to chuck this computer out the window!!! 2 days and still not
fixed...I hate reformatting, but sometimes I wish I would just bite the
bullet and do it...it would certainly be easier, less time-consuming, & less
frustrating than this!!!!!

4kaz:

Please tell me where you get a copy of Bcupdate2.

My OEM Dell computer does not have it. And Microsoft also does not seem to
have it.

Please help.

Thanks a million.
