NTFS.sys Corrupted or Missing

XP Pro fails to start and I get the message that
Windows\System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys is corrupted or
missing. I've run the Recovery Console in an attempt to
Repair the file. Per instructions in the Microsoft
Knowledgebase on a similar error, I copied ntfs.sys from
the Install Disk to windows\system32\drivers and also
tried to start with the same copy in windows\system32
\dllcache. From the beginning of this problem, ntfy.sys
has always been listed when using the DIR command in the
Recovery Console. I've run CHKDSK and found no errors.
I also ran a diagnostic program from the hard drive
manufacturer and found no errors. The computer had been
working very well (1Ghz, Celleron, 512Meg RAM). As a
matter of habit, I restart once per week to perform
resets and cookie dumps, etc. Have not added hardware or
software other than Windows Updates (I think) during the
past week. CAN ANYONE HELP??!!!

You may want to try to do a repair install.
If so, you may need to reinstall any drivers for devices XP does not
recognize. Make sure you have them handy.
MOST if not all your programs will remain intact and you should lose no
data if all goes well.
However all of windows updates will need to be reinstalled.
Make sure all your important data is backed up in case it fails and a
reformat and fresh reload is needed.

1) Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more
information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's
documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
2) Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or
DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. (You can also boot with a
Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386
folder on the CD)
3) When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
4) When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup
screen, press ENTER:
5) To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. At this point an option to press R
to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.
6) On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.
7) Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup. (copied and
pasted from somewhere, I forget :)
