Most likely FAT32 because Windows 98 does not work with NTFS and you
have to convert to NTFS manually.
To check: open MY COMPUTER and right-click the grey header line. Check
"File System" to add a column for this information.

Thorston..thanks for post , but I am unable see any "grey header line" as
you suggest.

Open "My Computer"
Single click the "C" drive icon
Read the file system in the "Details" panel of Explorer.
Or right click on the drive and select "Properties"
Read the filesystem type on the General tab.

Good Luck.

Another way to determine this is right-click any folder and choose
Properties. If there is no Securtiy tab either your NTFS is broke or you
have FAT32.

From Windows Explorer, highlight your c: drive and right-click/ Properties.
This will tell you which file system (probably NTFS)

If it is XP Home Edition there won't be any Security tab either unless
in Safe Mode.

Since he did an upgrade from Windows 98, it's almost certainly
FAT32, not NTFS. It doesn't convert automatically, and if he had
done it manually, he would know it.

ah... I stand corrected...

But you know even with NTFS if the user doesn't have admin priviledges the
Security tab still won't be there? Or is it just empty?

Sorry for the delayed answer.

For a "limited" user the Security tab is not present.
