ntfs conversion help

I have an external drive WD 80 gig that is fat 32. Should
I use conversion or just simply format to ntfs?
When I started to format I noticed that the allocation
cluster choice was set at default. What is the default
cluster size that is used? Is it 512 or higher?
If it is 512 then should I set it at a higher cluster
size if I am going to use it for capturing or is a lower
cluster size better?
