NTFS and MFT corruption

M

MS282044

This is the second time in 4 weeks that I am getting the following error: "
The file or directory \<folder> is corrupt and unreadable.
Please Run the Chkdsk utility".

I have change the hard drive with a different hard drive after the first
time I received this error because I assume I was having a hard drive error.
Now I believe it is an OS problem.

The first time I received this error I did a reboot of the system and it did
a chkdsk and I ended up with a folder called "found" .

This time I did a reboot and the hard drive was not found. I had to re-do a
format, drive letter assignment and a restore from a from a Saturday backup
since the nightly backup is showing these errors.

The server affected has 2 hard drives, an C: drive and D: drive. Both hard
drives are 160GIG. Windows 2000 Server was installed and fully updated( and
still is). I then ran Disk Management to format the d: drive and assign it a
drive letter. In Disk Management the drive showed "healthy" and as a "basic"
drive.

This is the most important drive I have out of the 33 servers I run on my
network. I have no problem with other drives on the other servers with are a
mixture of EN, JP, IT, DE, FR,SP and etc on NT4, W2K Std Server, W2K Adv
Server and 2003 NET Ent. Servers.

Any help will be gladly welcomed.

If you have already replaced the hard drive itself and this has happend
again, I might suspect the following:

- Problem with the hard drive controller. Are all cables snug and tight?
- Heat issue - any problems that you are aware of?
- What file system filters might be running on the system - for example a/v
or real time replication? If you temporarily disable these, does the
problem go away?

Have you looked in Event Viewer to see what errors are being reported ?

Searching the MB KB for the text of the message might be interesting.

I think I'd replace the SCSI card. You seem to have a bunch of
systems. Can you swap the card for a equivalent card it another
system to see if the problem moves ?

I have search the MS KB for the text of the message which points to a
MFT/FAT/NTFS problem. I have not viewed Event Viewer and will do so. This is
a IDE drive.
