NTDS General EndPoint mapper

When I try to add a user or a computer I receiver the following message:e
attempt to communicate with global catalog \\server2000.cardinal.local failed
with the following status:

There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.

The operation in progress might be unable to continue. The directory
service will use the locator to try find an available global catalog server
for the next operation that requires one.

The record data is the status code.

Does anyone know what I should do to resolve this issue? Thanks for your
help in advance.

JB,

This is often, but not always, an indication that there is a problem with
DNS!

Can you install the Support Tools and run netdiag /fix? If you do not want
to install the Support Tools ( really strongly very much recommend that you
do...get my point? :-) ) then you can simply - from a command prompt - enter
net stop netlogon and then ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /registerdns
and finally net start netlogon. This *should* populate your DNS server's
FLZ with the four sub-folders ( which are _msdcs, _sites, _tcp and _udp ) or
any that might be missing plus all of the appropriate records.

Also, make sure that your TCP/IP configuration settings have only your
internal DNS Server IP Address(es) and -NOT- your ISP DNS Server IP
Address(es).....

I got this once when I changed the IP adddress of an AD DC. Foolish boy.
Here's a horror story.
Even setting it back to what it was didn't work. Ended up doing all kinds of
things I wouldn't recommend. I had to reset the computer account password
for other reasons and eventually had to create a reservation for the IP
address on the DHCP server and switched my server, temporarily, over to
DHCP. This updated DHCP, and the integrated DNS and WINS with the proper IP
address again and things almost returned to normal. I returned the server to
it's orginal IP, turned off the lights and left the room hoping noone saw me
messing with it.
I am now older and somewhat wiser.

Cary,
Thank you that resolved my problem. I found what started the
problem in an article. Tis particular company is using an old fax server
software program that requires using the RPC Locator, once I disabled the RPC
Locator I was able to add pc's and users again, but lost the fax software
program and once I re-inabled the RPC locator the problem came back. I had
the admin tools already loaded and took your suggestion and that also worked.

Thanks, JB
