Ntbackup

Hi!

Problem 1:
Have some problems with ntbackup. I have 2 windows 2000 servers that uses
ntbackup to take nightly backups (one 23:00 and one 01:00) to file on a
shared computer. Now and then (2-3 times every week, ) this doesn´t work.
The backup log says that "No unused media could be found"

Have tried to delete yesterdays *.bkf file before new backup is taken - with
same result.

What can I be doing wrong? Or is this a "feature"

Problem 2:
Everytime I change the tape on our 2003 server the backup fails - no error -
just an emty log.
If use the same tape 2 or more times in a row - the first night it fails and
night 2,3,4 etc works fine.
In the eventlog I only see that the backup has started - no more
I use the same job every night

Any clues?

Re problem #1 - what is the SP level on the W2k servers? SP4 is supposed to
fix this AFAIK....is the job set to append or overwrite? I'm more accustomed
to doing tape backups, but this may help...
Re problem # 2 - what do you see in the backup log file itself?

Hi Bob!

I suppose the /UM switch apply to "problem 2". If so - I have already
applied /UM - doesnt help

Is this only brand new tapes? Or does the same thing happen if you
"reuse" a tape?

Happens when I reuse the tapes. Had this problem also with win2000 years ago
but then the /UM switch did the trick.

#1

I´m not sure if they have SP2 or SP3 (not SP4 anyway). I´ll check.
The job is set to overwrite.

#2

When the backup fail - the log is totally emty

No, not at this point.
One is a Citrix Server and the other is an Application Server - both tested
for SP2 only.

Is there a patch for the backup problem only?

See if the one in KB 330306 helps. It will let you use "rsm inventory"
