ntbackup stop responding / hang

I have a file that always cause ntbackup, everytime when I
backup that file (manually by using windows2000 ntbackup
GUI utility), it starts to backup properly, however while
it is backuping up.... the computer will hang up...... the
only way I can do is to press to reboot button to reboot
my computer.....
If I write a batch file to schedule this backup process...
the ntbackup is always running.... which do not terminate
automatically.... and that file cannot be open as it is
being lock by some other process....
After I kill the ntbackup manually in task manager.... the
file is released... and it can be open .....
In both cases... there is empty in the log file.....

Did anyone have any idea why it will happen and how to
solve this problem??

Thanks a lot : )

It is a .nsf file (mail file of a domino server), I have
already shut down the server before backup, so the file is
not in use while backup.....
(P.S other mail file can be backup properly, except that
one..... any idea??)

Thanks and Regards,
Carrie

Not sure. Can you copy the file elsewhere and do anything with it as a test?

Yes of course, I can copy the file to another location for
testing.... what's kind of test you suggest to do??

I have do some test last night, I found that there are 2
files have the same problem... But there is difference
behavior between these 2 files....
(let here say FileA and FileB)
Every time while backing up FileA, it will cause ntbackup
stop responding....
However for FileB, sometims it can be backup
successfully... but sometimes it will lock by ntbackup and
cause ntbackup stop responding...

Any suggestion or idea??

Thanks and Regards,
Carrie

I meant, if you copy the file elsewhere, can you back it up successfully? If
you copy it to the same directory it resides in, but rename it
(filename2.ext), can you back it up successfully?

I have copied those 2 problem files to another location
and perform the backup as you suggested.
The result is difference between these 2 files, one of
them can be backup successfully, howver the other still
cannot be backup (cause ntbackup hang)....

....Any idea??

It really does sound like the files are in use or something.
Isn't there a better way to back up Domino? I haven't used it in ages, but
isn't there an online backup procedure for it?

But if the files are in used, by default ntbackup should
skip the opened file and go to backup next file, isn't it?
I also don't know is there another better way to backup
domino....
I know if we want ntbackup to backup open file, we can
change the following registry value to 1

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ntbackup\Backup
Engine\Backup files inuse

But I'm not sure is it reliable to backup open file, thus
we prefer to do the backup on offline domino...

Yes, usually...
I also don't know is there another better way to backup
domino....

I'd look into that. You don't want to end up losing mail. I work with
Exchange, not Notes, but for the former, I know that offline backus are not
recommended.
