ntbackup skipping files

D

Doug

I am trying to take 2 copies of a folder containing lots of folders each
containing .jpg files.

dir /s of the top folder shows 15963 files 32GB.

Running ntbackup of the top folder copies 2737 files, 8GB.
Is there a restriction on the file's path name?
The folder names can be long, and the files within the folders may be long.

BTW none of these files are open. I'm trying to get 2 BU tapes so that I
can delete the folder and regain the 32GB space.

What does the ntbackup-generated log file report?

The log file shows nothing out of the ordinary. The estimated size is 8GB,
not the 32GB it should be.

You need to supply much more information, e.g.
- What are you trying to back up? "Top Folder" does not mean
a great deal to me.
- What was the exact command you used that showed you
32 GBytes?
- What is the contents of your .bks file? You can find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Doug\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data
- What is the contents of your backup log file?

I ran ntbackup wizard, and asked for D:\Oldphotos to be backed up.
My Computer properties says it is 32GB in size.

Dir/s in CMD says it is 15963 files and 32GB in size.

When ntbqackup starts it says there are only 2737 files of 8GB so I cancel
the backup. I nhhave ru it several times, so the run with the complete log
has been deleted, but it says t]it used only 8GB of tape with a compression
of .9 to 1.
I'll run it again tomorrow for a full log, but it takes an hour to run.

Here is the log of one of the cancelled jobs.

Does the files have the archive flag? Else ntbackup will skip them.

You have a backup log history of 10 files. One of them
would show a completed run - let's have a look at it!

We also need to sse the contents of your .bks file, as
mentioned before.

I thought that NORMAL and COPY mode copied everything.
If not, how do I specify EVERYTHING?

D

Doug

I did an attrib +a /s on the top folder and checked one subfolder completely.
Every files has the archive bit. I then used ntbackup wizard to back up
just one folder with 2667 files in it, 1.2GB. Only 340 files and 51MB was
selected. Doing a restore from the tape shows NO .JPG files at all.
How can I get ntbackup to select ALL files.
I use the wizard and select one folder (+ sub folders) with no verify. I
haven't tried the command line. The wizard does not have any option to
EXCLUDE .jpg files the way a .bks could.
Is there a special .bks file which is ALWAYS included and may have some
excludes in it?

P

Pegasus \(MVP\)

The .bks file gets generated by the wizard. I gave you its location
in my previous reply. I'm still hoping you'll get around to posting
it here some day.

Great! And what about the log file from an uninterrupted run?

The latest daily backup has failed, running out of tape and couldn't take all
the Exchange database.
I've just checked the contents of the tape and it, also, has not included
..jpg files.

This is like extracting a wisdom tooth. I mentioned once before
that I need the .bks file (which you supplied after the second
request) and the log file, of which there are ten versions and of
which you keep supplying the one that you terminated manually.
What's so confidential about one of the previous ones? Sigh -
I'm about to give up.

D

Doug

Finally solved.
There is a registry entry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup]

BackupAssist had modified this to include a line to exclude .jpg and .jpeg,
for a once-only backup I ran a few months ago. The line was not deleted when
the backup job was deleted.
Deleting this line has fixed the problem.

I have advised BackupAssist of this error.

Thanks, everyone, for your involvement.
