NTBackup Seems to be Missing Files

In attempts to restore, NTBACKUP shows directory structures only with no
files – the BKF file is 100GB in size.

What happened to all the files that were backed up?

How can backups of empty directory structures take up 100GB?

BKFRecovery is reading the file now and seems to be seeing files that are
not listed in the empty directory structure that NTBACKUP displays.

Why is NTBACKUP not displaying the files?

Thanks for your help!

Did you catalog the file?
Also, did you regularly check the backup logs to make sure you didn't have
any errors?

Hello,

Thank you for your response!

I had nothing to do with the backups themselves.

Let's assume they did not check the logs.

How does one "catalog" the file?

I am still curious about the following questions:

How does one "catalog" the file?

In NTBackup/restore....find the backup file, right-click, catalog.

Well, the folders that were being backed up weren't empty, right?
Why is NTBACKUP not displaying the files?

See what happens when you catalog.

Hello,

I did discover this and cataloging does not help - all but the first backup
has empty directories. If the data was static, I would say they first did a
full bacikup and then incrementals. However, it is most likely that new files
were created and that at least some old files were modified. However, all
subsequent backups contain empty directories - including newly created
drectories (but no files within).

Correct.

See what happens when you catalog.

Before and after cataloging, I can see all the directories but they are all
empty.

Is there some way to (inadvertantly) tell NTBACKUP to backup directories and
not the files?

Possibly; why not start an NTBackup job to file & play with it to see?
