NTBACKUP on Windows 2000

I am having a problem with ntbackup as described in Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article – 264604, (skipped files in folder backup.bks, folder not
found) but after trying all the suggestions I still get the same
problem.

I have a windows 2000 domain, logged onto the backup server as the
domain admin, I use the ntbackup wizard to select files from a user’s
computer (all win xp) in the domain and then back them up to a local
hard drive on the backup server. (Separate tasks for each machine, all
done using the wizard) A scheduled task runs 30 mins before any of the
backups start and logs the users off of their machines (in case they
forget to log out) and then the backups begin. The bks files are NOT
edited at all and the domain admin is used as the runas account, which
definitely has access to the bks files.

Sometimes the backup works, sometimes it doesn’t. There seems to be no
logical reason as to why sometimes the backup runs and sometimes it
fails, the user doesn’t do anything different, and for sure the bks file
or the job has not been edited. It is getting very annoying since this
software does everything I want it to when it works, so I really don’t
want to have to spend more money on another backup solution. The only
thing I can think of is that for some reason the users pc's may be going
into some sort of sleep mode and may not be responding in time... but I
would think it wouldnt take long to bring the computer back up. Any
suggestions?

PS – Has the ntbackup program changed in Server 2003? We’re still
testing it but will be upgrading our domain in the next few months. If
that would fix our problem I would change today.

- What do the backup reports say?
- What does the Event Viewer report?

- What does the Event Viewer report?

The backup reports say: (as posted in original message)

Skipped files in folder backup.bks, folder not
found.

There is nothing in the event viewer logs. Anyone out there know what's
going on?
