NT4 SP5 workstation with windows 2003 DC and NT4 BDC

HI all

I have an NT 4 domain with one PDC and 4 BDCs. On the client side, I am
running mostly windows XP but around 20 Windows NT workstation with SP5 that
I cannot ugprade now because there are some important applications running.
I cannot upgrade client OS as well as Service pack

I have plan to upgrade Windows NT PDC to Windows 2003 domain controller and
make it a new child domain under our forest root domain which is running
from before. i am only concerned about 20 NT4 workstations that are running
NT SP5, would they be able to login after PDC upgrade to Windows 2003. I
will leave NT 4 BDCs as is for now.

Thanks in advance.

What applications will support (the buggy) SP5 and will not support
SP6a + HotFixes?

It is (very) foolish to run NT without the latest fixes unless you
1) have ZERO choice AND 2) are completely secure including
from (other) local sources.

It's no big deal to use NT with Win2003, and theorectically at least
SP4 is sufficient.

It is a good idea to also apply the "DSClient" Upgrage (available from
the MS website, especially when using Win2003 (as opposed to 2000.)

Thanks Herb for quick reply. As you mentioned SP4 is enough to login to
Windows 2003 domain. is it without DS Client installed. I mean if I dont do
anything with the client and leave them as is with NT4 with SP5, can we
login them after NT4 PDC is upgraded to Windows 2003 domain controller with
NT 4 BDCs?

Thanks

My understanding is "yes" but you still haven't indicated which
app(s) NEED SP5....

This is very unsafe. Given time you will almost certainly get
virus infected unless your physical security is EXTREME.

Infact these PCs are not in our control and running some proprietry
applications, and their admin says that they need specific version of IE
which is available with SP5 and if you upgrade to SP6, IE is also upgraded.

And chance are an old IE is even more dangerous unless
you completely lock these machine from visiting the Internet
and most anywhere else.

Stuff that old is just not safe.
