NT4 Upgrade to Windows 2K AD

I was planning on upgrading an NT 4 domain controller to 2003 active
directory. The 2003 deployment guide has some pretty detailed steps on how
to accomplish this. I just ran into a problem involving the backup software
running on one of my BDCs. The BDC is also my tape backup server for the NT
4 domain. The current software version doesn't support backing up Windows
2003 and the newer version doesn't run on NT4. Of course since the software
is on a BDC, I can't upgrade the OS to go to the newer version...

So I am now looking at upgrading from NT4 to Windows 2000 as an interim
solution. The documentation for this is not as detailed as the info for
migrating to 2003. Are all of the steps basically the same?

Are there any particular 2000 related gotchas that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I guess you can't upgrade the BDC at this stage? Why not back the 2003
server up to a file on a share on an NT machine and then back that
directory up as usual? At least until you have fully migrated to 2003.

What advantage does that have over going straight to 2003? As I see it
you will still have the same problmes with regards to the backup.
