NT4 Domain to Win2k

I have a working NT4 Domain. I want to add a BDS that will be a Win2K machine
and then promote it to PDS. I DO NOT want to do the Active Directory, I just
want to upgrade the OS and leave everything as it is.

Can Win2K act as a PDS in a NT4 Domain, with a BDS as NT4, and not have to
go the AD route? I use WINS in the domain also.

I don;t have the time to go learn about AD and what it can do. The NT4
domain works just fine and if it ain't broke I don't need to fix it. I just
want a PDS that has some of the Win2K features like Update and USB.

The term is BDC and PDC.

A Win 2k can not be a BDC there is no such thing. All DCs are equal except
for the five FSMO roles.
AD is what changes a Win 2k member server into a DC. Without AD you can not
have a Win 2k DC.

Install the Win 2k server as a member server. That is the ONLY way you can
have a Win 2k server on a NT 4.0 network without using AD.

Listen to Danny's info plus....

NT4 Server's End of Life (EoL) was Dec 31, 04 and NO more Critical Updates will issued
unless your company specifically contracts a service agreement with Microsoft. Maintaining
NT4 server now is a security risk that can only be mitigated with that contract ($$) or
upgrading to Win2K Server/Win2003 Server and Active Directory.
