server.I would like to install a Active Directory on 2000 server and promote
it to DC.I already have DNS on this server. What is the best steps to install

Well, I'm guessing that you would like to essentially upgrade your domain to
Windows 2000 Active Directory. The best method I have used and seen for
doing that is to take your new machine, install it as a Windows NT 4.0 BDC,
take the PDC offline, promote the new BDC to the PDC, then upgrade it to
Windows 2000 (or 2003), assuming all goes well, you can then just wipe the
former PDC (DO NOT BRING IT BACK ONLINE).

That will leave you with Active Directory running on the new server, which
you can then add additional Domain Controllers to when you're ready. As for
the former PDC, it becomes a sort of offline backup in case the upgrade
fails. In a failure, you can down the new server and bring the PDC back
online to recover.

That's the basic process, post if you need more detail.

Hi,

1. You can migrate with the ADMT tool the objects (user and computer) from
the NT4 Domain to the AD.
or
2. You make a inplace upgrade of the NT4 Domain.

The better way is the second:

- Install a new BDC in the NT 4 Domain.
- Promot it to a PDC and grade it up to 2000 or 2003
- All the objects are in the Active Directory (the windows 2000 Server too)

You can use the DNS on the 2000 Server
