DNS problems

My original question was this;

When trying to promote a new server to an existing domain
I keep getting

"The domain "mydomain.com" cannot be contacted. Ensure
that the DNS domain name is typed correctly. This
condition may be caused by a DNS lookup problem. If this
domain was recently created, its name may not yet be
registered with the Domain Naming Service.

The primary domain controller is a Windows NT server that
uses VitalQip management software and as far as I can see
everything seems to be setup correctly. Please advice!

My first response was this;

A Windows 2000 Server or later can't be come an domain
controller of an existing NT4.0 Domain, the NT4.0 PDC
must be upgraded to at least Windows2000 Server, the
domains can still contains a mix of NT4.0 DCs, 2000
DCs, and 2003 DCs as long the functional level stay at
mixed.

My follow-up question is;
The primary domain controller is a Windows NT server that
uses VitalQip management software. Before I started
working here, they upgraded one NT4 server to WIndows
2000 server and installed and configured Active Directory
on it. Now the other two NT 4 servers serve as the
primary domain controller and backup as it was told to
me. DNS and WINS are installed on these two servers
managed through VitalQip management software. So is this
still considered the primary for the domain and the cause
to my probelm.

Ernest,
The PDC NT4.0 PDC must be upgraded to at least Windows 2000 Server, only
NT4.0 BDCs can exists as NT4.0 Domain Controllers. The DNS can't be hosted
on NT4.0 since NT4.0 dose not support srv records.

Or just to add, if they can upgrade their QIP to a version that can handle
Active Directory's SRV requirements.

If they upgraded a Windows 2000 server to AD they made it the first DC
in an AD Domain. The NT4 PDC cannot be a PDC in the same Domain as the
Win2000 AD server. It is likely that the BDC is still part of the NT4
PDC's Domain. In other words, unless I've misunderstoodm you actually
have two Domains.

Cheers,

Cliff

Thank you, Cliff.

Exactly the same thing that I wrote in a previous post that Ernest made. He
has a couple of posts going for the same question....
