Looking For Info How to Set Up 2nd DC

Hi,

I recently upgraded our old NT domain to W2k3.

Right now I have one active directory domain controller and DNS (the new
2003 server).

I still have one of the old NT4.0 machines up and running, but I'd like to
shut it down and replace it with another 2k3 server.

I'm looking for some tips or documentation on how to set up another domain
controller in an AD domain.

I assume I just need to run dcpromo and select "make this machine a domain
controller in an existing domain" or whatever the exact wording is.

Do I need to set it up as a global catalog server? Or some other kind of
server?

Also, I need to find some documentation on how to set up a secondary DNS --
how do I link it with my primary DNS?

Thanks

I'm assuming this is all within a single site. It is extremely simple.
Join the member server to the domain and dcpromo it, make sure to point the
dns server to the same dns server as your first dc.

If you have an integrated acive directory dns install dns on the new server
and make it a secondary to the primary dns server. That way when you
promote it, it should be all setup with dns. Once the second dns is brought
up you now have dns redundency so make sure your clients have this as an
alternate dns server. Also I would think about making this second server a
Global Catalog. If you have wins on the other dc you can set that up on
this dc and make them push/pull partners, but that is unrelated to the
promo.

Hope this helps

Thank you,

You are correct, it is a single site, and it seemed like it should be a
fairly straightforward affair. We are not doing anything fancy, I just need
to build a backup AD/DNS server.

Thanks again.
