NSLOOKUP Question

S

Steve

Hello

I was hoping someone might be able to provide an answer to
the following question:

:>nslookup

Default Server: machine.lan.domain.com
Address: 10.10.10.10

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.hpgtm.speedera.net
Addresses: 192.6.234.9
Aliases: www.hp.com

However, if I add a '.' to the end of the name www.hp.com.
I don't get the DNS request timed out message.

Is this normal?

Thanks in advacne

When you try with out the trailing "." nslookup first tries appending your
client's DNS suffix to the query:

www.hp.com.mycompany.com

You can see this behavior in nslookup by using the "d2" option.

c:\> nslookup
