Unintentionally disabled display adapter in hardware
config., so blank screen after bootup. Reinstalled XP, now
bootup halts with message "Cannot start Windows, NTLDR is
comnpressed. Press ctrl-alt-del to restart". Please advise
how to recover.

Thanks.

Start the system with the CD-ROM and choose to repair the installation. Then use the Recovery Console to copy the NTLDR from the
CD-ROM to the system root"

Presuming you have a 'proper' CD, boot that, and, instead of Setup,
take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is
blank, and TAB over.

Use
COPY x:\i386\ntldr C:\ntldr

where x is the CD drive letter
I'd copy ntdetect.com too, just in case
