Now I'm unable to back up data or burn CD-Rs

Hi all,

I posted recently about explorer.exe crashing unexpectedly when I
click on certain (a few, for no apparent reason) media files.

But, today I was backing up some data on CD-R when all of a sudden my
burner software quit working. The following are the most recent
entries in Event Viewer.

Can anyone please help? I don't know what to do. Thank you for any
advice and suggestions.

Hey Jyeshta,

I would start with that 7001 event ID. It tells us that the WORKSTATION
service is not running.

1) Can you start this manually via the SERVICES control panel?

2) Check the properities of the WORKSTATION service, and see if it is set
to AUTOMATIC

Also do the same for the SERVER service as well.

Hi Craig,

Thank you so much! I found Services under Administrative Tools and I
switched both WORKSTATION and SERVER to manual. I think both were
disabled.

But this now leads me to believe that those error logs in Event Viewer
were unrelated to my CD-RW drive failing? Is there any way to be sure
whether the drive failing is due to a problem with the drive, or a
problem with the OS? In Device Manager, the drive is reported as
working properly, yet it will not write, read, or play any CDs.

Any further help would be so gratefully received. Thank you again.

Hey Gail,

You'll want to have those 2 services on AUTOMATIC so they will start
running the next time your PC boots up.

As for the CD-RW, have you confirmed that you are using the latest drivers
from that vendor?

Do you know what model that CD is?

What error do you get from Windows when you try to read a CD?

Hi Craig,

Thank you, I just switched those two services to Automatic.

I'm pretty sure my drivers for the CD-RW are current - after burning a
few disks successfully yesterday, it just completely stopped working.
It's a Lite-On LTR-52246S. The error I get is that Windows tells me
to please insert a disk into the drive, when there is one in there,
and I re-do it over again, but no luck. I just ordered two new CD-RW
drives (in case one is defective) and I'm keeping my fingers crossed
that the problem is with the drive and not the OS. I'll find out when
I install a new drive, I guess. I'm very nervous about it because
without a CD-Rom drive I couldn't do a fresh install of the OS.

Thank you again, so much, for your patience and help.
