I was upgrading to Winxp when my comuter went into a reboot loop. It would
not recognize the XP install CD to reinstall or recover so I put in my Win
2000 disc. Its now resinstalled to W2K. It partitioned I think, the drive
though in disk mamt it shows just a 40 gig volume and does not memtion
anything about a partition. I can see all the old information 20 gigs of
stuff in Explorer, show 20 of 40 gigs in proerties on C drive but nothing is
installed. Is this mormal? Do I now reinstalll all programs? Should I now
contuniue with upgrage to Winxp? Look for the next step.

To do a clean install boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. When you get to
the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you
delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting
the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new
install.

During Windows XP setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these to your new install before connecting
to any network.

Will a clean install lose all the data and programs? Is it better to format
C:\ now and do the install?

BA

Yes, yes.

Dave,
Thanks. I didn't expect an answer at this hour of the night. I thnk a
clean drive via format and install might be better and less confusing for the
comupter. It has been rough to this point upgrading from Win2000 to XP.

Started the clean install. Deleted partition and started over like you
suggested below. Accepted license, formatted, while examming the files it
states:

The following value in the.sif file used by Setup is corrupt or missing:
Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDisksFiles] with key "SP1.cab"
Setup cannot continue. To quit setup F3.

Perhaps during the power outage Friday night during my first reboot in this
same install did something to the installation disc???

Please advise.

BA

Are you booting the Windows XP CD-Rom?

Yes but in does not self boot. I downloaded the 6 disc set from your web
site and when asked put in the windows CD.

The CD-Rom appears to be an integrated SP1 install so the setup disks don't
match.

Possibly set the boot order in cmos setup to CD-Rom first in boot sequence.
Even though you set the boot order to CD-Rom first some bios (I know Dell
does this) requires you to hit F2 (or some other key) to boot from CD-Rom at
POST.

Bummer. The cmos is set to cd-rom boot first and floppy 2nd. I will try the
F2. Not sure what is meant by at POST.

No way to edit the floppy boot discs to match?

If you can't boot the CD-Rom get the sp1 setup disks utility here.

POST = power on self test

F2 did not work. The CD Setup Disc is an orginal that is why I used the boot
disks with no SP. But you gave me an idea. I have downloaded the SP1 and
SP2 boot discs and will try all 3.

If the CD-Rom is a gold version (no service pack) then download for the
"Windows XP original release" from the link I provided.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these to your new install before connecting
to any network else you'll be almost immediately infected with msblast and
or sasser variants.

I have not found the link to download SP2 other than order it on CD that said
it would take 4-6 weeks to get.

With MacAfee and Zonealarm, and the link you gave me, might be enough while
I get SP2 downloaded. I only have dialup available so it will take awhile.

Can you help with SP2?

Then install the alternative patches mentioned above.

Dave,

Update

First I want to Thank You for your support and help. It was great to have
someone to troubleshoot thru in a timely manner without invention for others
with those comments of non-informational stuff, to put it politely.

2nd It's running fine. Used SP1 boot disks and it worked just fine which
was kind of strange as this is an original disk. Too old I might add even
after just a of couple years. The updates installed via dial-up was brutal.
Approx 20 hours, mostly in the middle of the night, but slow. Will have to
make a plan to change that when I build a computer for my Granddaughter.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear it's sorted.
