I like xp to notify me when someone is trying to update the xp registery,
and to give me a chance to accept or deny the update. This is good for
stoping viruses from updating my computer. How do I do that?

You need a third-party program for that. Lots of antispyware programs
have an "immunize" feature. Spybot has one, and I'm sure others do too.

Before you blindly install an antispyware program, it is always smart to
check on MVP Eric Howes' site for rogue programs. Rogue antispyware
programs purport to be "good guys" but are really "bad guys" intent on
stealing your money.

Defender Bets 2 - considered by some to be a rogue as well.
Its trialware, for testing - not for putting on ones work or home computer
yet I fear. If you have MS antispy beta 1 hold on to it till the bitter
end. If not Mr Howes site is a definite place to go.

Zone Alarm Pro warns me when something is trying to update the registry.
Worth a try....

You can't by using anything that is supplied with the operating system. You
need another application created by a 3rd party.

I have found that the best is Spybot Search and Destroy. There is a module
within the program called Tea Timer. I find it is the only such utility that
will notify me "before" the registry has been changed, and will ask me to
either allow or deny the change.

Quite a few other programs seem to notify me "after" the fact and then will
try to repair the change. This is not always successful, depending upon what
caused the registry change.
