I have Services: Automatic Updates = Disabled
I also do not have MacroMedia loaded

I just got a ballon prompt in my Taskbar area notifying me that a New
MacroMedia is available.

Where did this come from (ie. what triggered this prompt)??

Automatic Updates applies only to Windows/Microsoft update. On
almost every application you load there is a background update check
associated with it. In most all cases there is a option box for the user
to de-select automatic updates.

On the Macromedia box you can probably open the notification icon
to find options for automatic updating.

R. McCarty -- Thanks for response.

Where I'm confused is:

1) In checking Taskbar MacroMedia is not listed.
2) In checking Processes MacroMedia is not listed
3) In searching my C drive I did find a CLSID for a MacroMedia Director
Control -- so obviously its somewhere in the registry.
4) As previously stated -- to the best of my recollection -- MacroMedia was
never loaded unless by M$ or it was brought in by some other program.
5) Not in Add / Remove Programs.

----- So, other then attempting to delete All registry entries anyway to
kill it

MacroMedia is now owned by Adobe. Some software that might be
signalled for updates:

Acrobat Reader
Shockware
Flash
Authorware

In some cases the updater components for many applications is
located in \Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data ____
____ being the company name. Check your folder for Macromedia.
Some updaters operate as a Service so using AutoRuns may help
to locate it's calling location.

Had just looked on Adobe site an have a download program to uninstall.

However, still like to know how this (or any other program for that matter)
is being triggered on my system --
In other words:

1) is program making periodically calls to Adobe, or
2) after install is it calling Adobe with my email address
(don't accept this as what if my email address changed)

How do I stop as has to go through some port if via web?

Why? You never watch online videos? If you uninstall it, your
ability to do so will probably be hindered in some cases.

It's nothing any more sinister than Windows Update: a program is on
your system that periodically checks for Adobe software updates
whenever you run one of the programs it checks.

No one is spying on you. No one has access to your person info.

Chill.

No or rarely.

That's not the issue. Both from a learning perspective and knowing what's
on my system is where my interest lies. Searches of MSDN haven't yielded
much so obviously I'm not searching for the right thing or calling it by
correctly.

So what do you call the program or what dll (or dll function) is it?

Any help appreciated.

It's not a MS program, that's why you won't find it in any MSDN
articles.

Google "adobe software updater"

If you open the task manager, you may see a running application for
which this is a reasonable prompt.
